Finding games that are appropriate for children can be difficult. Luckily there is a huge assortment of games that are out there. From Educational games that teach specific skills to Adventure games that will have kids solving problems to progress a story. There are some general guidelines that should be used though.
Most games come with a rating system that is marked on both the front and back of games stating what the ratings board thinks is appropriate in terms of age group as well as possible content that parents may find objectionable.Never heard of this before? Keep in mind though that some types of games, like Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) titles can be rated for teens but due to chat content in the game between players, could be inappropriate.
I also tend to encourage talking to the clerks in the stores to get good ideas of both popular and appropriate titles as they would see what seems to sell well and may have heard some feedback. Online review sites can tend to be biased but many of the major companies do also offer free trials that would allow you to test the game for a short period of time to help you assess them.
